Call for Editor(s): Symbolic Interaction

The Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction (SSSI) invites applications for Editor(s) of the journal Symbolic Interaction for a five-year term beginning January 1, 2027. Symbolic Interaction is published by Wiley, which provides substantial financial and infrastructural support for the journal office (details available upon request). The journal is recognized internationally as the central scholarly outlet for the symbolic interactionist perspective. It receives over 100 manuscript submissions annually and is available in more than 6,000 institutions worldwide. The Editor(s) play a critical role in shaping the intellectual direction of interactionism and sustaining the journal’s position as a leading venue for theoretical and empirical scholarship. SSSI seeks candidates who will actively advance the journal’s mission and visibility within a global scholarly community. The position requires collaborative engagement with publishers, authors, reviewers, and SSSI officers, as well as thoughtful leadership in managing editorial processes and shaping the future of the perspective.

Position Responsibilities

  • Oversee all editorial operations for Symbolic Interaction, including manuscript review, decision-making, and production workflows
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase the quality, diversity, and international reach of submissions
  • Solicit manuscripts and special issue proposals that advance symbolic interactionism
  • Recruit, organize, and support a diverse and engaged editorial board
  • Represent the journal at academic conferences, especially SSSI and SI-EU meetings
  • Work collaboratively with Wiley, authors, reviewers, and SSSI officers
  • Provide intellectual leadership in shaping the direction and visibility of the journal and the perspective

Qualifications

  • A strong record of scholarly publications
  • Broad and deep understanding of symbolic interactionism
  • Recognition of the international scope and audience of the perspective
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with publishers, authors, reviewers, and professional organizations
  • Experience with academic journals (e.g., as editor, associate editor, editorial board member, or frequent reviewer)
  • Vision for the future of Symbolic Interaction and the symbolic interactionist perspective
