Call for Graduate Student (Paid) Intern: SSSI Media & Publications Committee

The Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction (SSSI) Media and Publications Committee is seeking a motivated Graduate Student Intern to support our work in digital communication, member engagement, and community outreach. The intern will work with the committee to develop and schedule social media content, assist in updating and building website content, and support membership recruitment and communication initiatives. This position is ideal for graduate students interested in symbolic interactionism, scholarly publishing, social media strategy, digital content creation, or professional service in academic associations. Applicants should be current graduate students in sociology or a related field, have strong writing and communication skills, and be comfortable working with social media platforms

Position Responsibilities

The Graduate Student Intern will work closely with the Media & Publications Committee to:

  • Develop and schedule social media content across platforms (e.g., Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, blog threads).
  • Assist in managing the SSSI website, including updating existing pages, posting new content, and helping develop new features or resources.
  • Support membership recruitment efforts, including preparing communication materials, highlighting member achievements, and working on outreach initiatives.
  • Collaborate on communication strategies, including drafting announcements, designing graphics, and supporting newsletter or blog content.
  • Assist with additional committee tasks related to visibility, engagement, and communication with current and prospective members.

Qualifications

  • Current graduate student (MA, MS, or PhD level) in sociology or a related field.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms (e.g., Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, blog threads) and experience with website design programs (e.g., Wildapricot, WordPress, Weebly, Squarespace).
  • An interest in symbolic interactionism and/or professional service in academic organizations.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Time Commitment & Benefits

  • Approximately 3–5 hours per week (flexible).
  • meaningful experience in academic communication, digital media, and service

  • Yearly stipend of $1,200
